BROKEN

BROKEN
2016.

In 2015 while at a residency at ISCP in NYC, I recorded the footage for the 8mm film Broken. A doll-like man is pulled through the streets of New York by a young woman with metallic teeth. They both have silvery eyes, and are dressed in costumes made of reflective material. It is never clear whether he is alive or dead, neither if the two people in the film are humans, androids or from another galaxy. Broken is both about human greed and about how hard it is to be human in a world without meaning and coherence. About loss and about being broken. We are surrounded by death and (natural) disasters, by doom and theories about a new Anthropocene era. But the more technologically advanced we become, the more we are also removing ourselves from ourselves, our senses and our unity with nature. This first edit which is premiering at Papay Gyro Nights art festival, is made with a voice-over that attempts to express some of these thoughts. The spoken text, in the form of a female voice, switches back and forth through a personal and a general perspective, and thus creates a scenario, where her own situation is mirrored in the world surrounding her.
